4 Stars The Rahm Emanuel segment on the Democratic primary race
Emanuel is an important figure in the Democratic political world. Charlie Rose says he is close to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. He decided not to choose between the candidates. Charlie Rose speaks to him after Clinton’s win in Pennsylvania when it nonetheless still appears that Obama is going to win the election. What Emanuel fears is what he calls a ‘bad loser’ that the one who is not chosen will turn his or her back on the other. By now it is clear that question is Hillary Clinton’s to answer. Emanuel points out that when Ted Kennedy lost to Carter in 1980 he did this, and it hurt the party. Emanuel appears to be a savvy political operator with plenty of confidence. I know nothing about his record as legislator. He does say during the program that he serves a heavy Catholic district which has had a long series of Catholic representatives. But it did not turn away from electing the Jewish Emanuel. This conversation has in one sense diminished value since we know the result of the primary fight. But I suspect Emanuel’s principle is a central one for the Obama campaign. Clinton can really help him, or should she decide, hurt him.
There was a kind of light- hearted friendly spirit in this conversation which made it pleasant if not especially exciting.
